Three senior police officers were suspended yesterday following an investigation into the removal of a flag from a military base in the southeastern Turkish province of Diyarbakır last week.
Mustafa Börekçi, deputy director of counter-terrorism unit of Diyarbakır police, Mustafa Mumcu and Abdurrahman Bişgin, two police superintendents at the riot police unit, were suspended from duty as part of an investigation by Interior Ministry inspectors.
A group of pro-PKK demonstrators removed the Turkish flag at the military base in Diyarbakır last Saturday in riots after the funeral of a PKK militant and a protester. The incident caused outrage in the country. Two "security officials" tasked with providing security in the perimeter of the base were suspended after the incident while the Turkish Armed Forces operating the base launched an investigation into the incident.
The masked protester was identified by the police who are now looking for the suspect. Earlier this week, one person was arrested for aiding and abetting the prime suspect who was initially described as a 16-year-old boy.
