The Turkish Ministry of Health will now offer free storage of sperm and ovum from individuals who cannot have children due to health problems for future use. A recently implemented regulation ensures that childless couples can have one or more children in the future as the storage does not have an expiration period, as was the case before. Sperm and ovum from patients undergoing treatment for cancer, operated on testicles and ovaries and unmarried people with low reproduction levels in their ovary reserves will be stored under the new regulation. Thus, people who have delayed having children for the sake of a career but suffer from low levels in their reserve, especially after age 30, will have an opportunity to give birth. Applicants only need a medical report proving their inability to have children due to their medical condition. Previously, the Ministry of Health used to store ovum for patients undergoing cancer treatment and ovary-related surgeries for only five years. However, this posed a problem for women who underwent treatment at an early age, as the ovum stored was discarded five years later, long before their plans to have children. As for men, cancer patients, those undergoing surgery for medical conditions that could cause a loss in ability to reprode and those with a low sperm count, will be provided free storage of sperm.
