Gen. Hulusi Akar, Commander of the Turkish Land Forces, was awarded the Legion of Merit by Gen. Ray Odierno, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, on Jan. 27. However, the background of the top U.S. commander along with a barrage of criticism that was launched on social media towards Akar for accepting the award have created controversy over the seemingly innocuous event.
