Ankara University's technology center Teknopark has developed a phone application that shows nearby shops where employees are proficient in foreign languages and where people can go and chat to improve their language skills.
The project, which will begin with cashiers, barbers and others getting English language training, will continue with shops where employees are proficient in English getting a stamp saying: "This is a language spot."
Tümer Altaş from Ankara University's Foreign Languages Faculty said the best way to improve one's language skill is to go to the country where that language is spoken. "However, not everyone can do that. That's why we have developed this project where people can find places they can speak English."
The application was developed to help people who want to improve their skills while shopping in a supermarket or getting a haircut. There are two separate learning modules, one for personnel and another for shoppers.
Employees will undergo intensive language training before a shop can get the stamp, Altaş said, adding that employees will enter a test afterward. Shops employing people who pass the test will be given the stamp. Those who want to practice their English can use the app to find shops with the stamp on the map.
The app can be used by those who will soon travel overseas but have no idea what to say at a barber or a supermarket, Altaş said. "How will you get your hair cut? You'll feel like a fish out of water. This project will teach people how to communicate. The app user will go out and say, ‘I want to shop in English today.' "
