A prison manager in western Turkey was shot dead by an unidentified gunman on Tuesday, local officials said.
İsmet Aktürk, 40, who was the manager of a high security prison in the Kandıra district of Kocaeli, a province east of Istanbul, was being driven to his workplace when he was hit by two bullets, according to Kocaeli Chief Public Prosecutor Mustafa Küçük. He succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.
Küçük said the incident was an act of terror and an investigation was underway.
Aktürk was appointed to the prison a year ago. The Kandıra prison houses convicts ranging from members of terrorist organizations to members of organized crime.
