A group of terrorists opened fire at a gendarmerie station located in the Hozat district of the eastern Tunceli province around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The terrorists reportedly opened fire from two different points using long barreled weapons.
The Turkish soldiers at the gendarmerie station retaliated by firing back, as a result of which the terrorists ran away into the nearby forest. The attack might have been undertaken by the "Liberation Army of the Workers and Peasants of Turkey" (abbreviated as TİKKO in Turkish), which is the armed wing of the Communist Party of Turkey/Marxist–Leninist which is described as a Maoist insurgent organization, the Doğan news agency claimed. The group claims to be carrying out a 'People's War' against the Turkish government.
Following the incident, in which there were no injuries or causalities, two helicopters were dispatched to the area, and security measures in the region have been tightened.
