In a statement released on Saturday, the Coast Guard said that it had detained 493 migrants trying to illegally cross the Aegean Sea to Greece. Officials said all were captured in boats in the provinces of Muğla, Aydın, İzmir, Balıkesir and Çanakkale. The Coast Guard said it had rescued nearly 3,000 migrants in the same waters since Aug. 10. Turkish officials started to transfer migrants from İzmir to refugee camps in the southeast. Regional crises have seen the number of migrants risking the perilous journey across the Aegean skyrocket in the past few years.
