Two police officers were killed and two were injured when the PKK terrorist organization detonated a landmine on the Hakkari-Van highway just as a police vehicle was passing at around 5.00 p.m. on Tuesday.
The explosion took place near the Gençlik Bridge, just 30 kilometers away from the southeastern Hakkari province.
The injured officers have been transferred to Hakkari State hospital and the security forces have launched a wide-scale operation in the area to find the terrorists.
The Turkish government has intensified its counterterror operations following the recent attacks carried out by the PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the EU and Turkey.
Formed in 1978, the terrorist group has been fighting the Turkish government for an independent state until the early 2000's. The group then shifted its goal to autonomy in predominately Kurdish inhabited regions of Turkey.
