Unusually rainy weather across Turkey left people astounded this week and meteorologists warn the rainy spell during the first week of May is predicted to last up until Sunday. Temperatures will return to the seasonal norm in western Turkey, which has a warm climate.Spring started late in Turkey, although the winter months were exceptionally warm and the real arrival of the season waited until this week's downpour. Temperatures dropped down to 12 degrees Celsius in western regions and Istanbul, and partly cloudy weather prevailed.
Weather forecasters predict the rainfall and low temperatures are here to stay, at least until the weekend while temperatures will fluctuate between 19 and 20 degrees Celsius, warmer than the past four days. Still cloudy weather and rainfall are forecasted for most of the country.
Professor Orhan Şen, a weather expert at Istanbul Technical University, told Anadolu Agency that temperatures would be close to "summer normal" starting next week. "Downpours will prevail in all regions except (arid) southeastern regions, and eastern regions run a risk of lightning strikes and floods. Starting from Monday, temperatures will significantly increase and we will see a respite from the rainfall."
