While the rest of the country readies to welcome summer with gradually rising temperatures, the east seems to be in the grip of a never-ending winter.
The snow in Van has yet to disappear, with 4 meters (13 feet) reported at the 3,000-meter Karapet Pass on the Van-Bahçesaray highway.
Locals say snow falls eight months of the year in the region, and the temperatures often dip below zero degrees Celsius (minus 17.8 degrees Fahrenheit).
Snow tops the hills in the surrounding region year-round, and the Roads and Traffic Authority keeps a snowplow stationed at the pass just in case it is needed.
