Two road workers were killed and four others injured in an armed attack by the PKK terrorist organization in the southeastern province of Şırnak on Sunday, officials confirmed Monday. The PKK attacked a site where two laborers were working on the 20th kilometer of the Şırnak-Van Highway in southeastern Turkey, the source said speaking on the condition of anonymity.
The injured workers have been hospitalized following the attack in Uludere district, the local governor's office said. The three PKK terrorists who attacked workers at the site were killed after security forces conducted an air-backed operation in the region, a security source said.
Meanwhile, a Turkish soldier was killed yesterday by a roadside bomb detonated by the PKK terrorist organization in Hakkari, according to the governor's office.
A statement released by the Hakkari Governor's Office said the soldier was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) in a mountainous region of Çukurca district, an attack that also injured another village guard who is being treated in the hospital, according to the source.
Meanwhile, four PKK terrorists were killed during an air-backed operation in Hakkari province's Yüksekova district and were reportedly plotting an attack on Turkish border posts in the region, the statement indicated.
Additionally, a separate attack left a village guard dead in the eastern province of Van, according to a local security source who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media.
From June 26 to July 3, a total of 70 terrorists were killed during 774 counterterror operations, the Interior Ministry said yesterday. According to the statement, security forces killed 55 terrorists, while four others were captured alive and 11 surrendered.
Security forces also destroyed seven shelters used by terrorists and 34 roadside bombs planted by the same group. A total of 129 hand grenades, 65 rifles - including 59 long-barreled rifles - and 2,906 kilograms (6,407 pounds) of material used for making explosives were seized in the operations.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the EU, resumed its nearly 40-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in July 2015, unilaterally violating the cease-fire.
Since then, over 600 security personnel, including troops, police officers and village guards, have died in PKK attacks, while more than 7,000 terrorists have been killed during operations across Turkey and northern Iraq.
