Türkiye’s average rainfall in August rises by more than 100% compared with the same month last year, reaching 16.2 kilograms per square meter, according to data from the General Directorate of Meteorology.
The August 2026 Areal Precipitation Report shows that the country’s long-term average August rainfall stands at 14.8 kilograms per square meter, while the figure was 7.9 kilograms in August 2025.
August rainfall is therefore 10% above the long-term average and more than double the level recorded in the same month last year.
Rainfall varies significantly across the country, with precipitation falling more than 80% below normal levels across much of the Marmara region, parts of the Aegean and Central Anatolia, and eastern parts of Southeastern Anatolia.
The Mediterranean region records its highest August rainfall in 11 years, while the Marmara region experiences its lowest level in 16 years.
By province, Rize in northeastern Türkiye records the country’s highest August rainfall at 107.5 millimeters.
Edirne in northwestern Türkiye and Şırnak in the southeast record their lowest August rainfall levels in 66 years, while Afyonkarahisar, Bilecik, Bursa, Eskişehir, Kırklareli and Tekirdağ in western and northwestern Türkiye see their lowest levels in 28 years.
Erzincan, Gümüşhane, Elazığ and Tunceli in eastern Türkiye record their highest August rainfall levels in 66 years. Malatya and Sivas in central-eastern Türkiye reach their highest levels in 55 years, Giresun on the Black Sea coast in 42 years and Karaman in south-central Türkiye in 29 years.
Türkiye records an average of 3.8 rainy days in August, above the long-term average of three days for the 1991-2020 period.
The eastern Black Sea coast and northeastern provinces of Ardahan and Kars record between 15 and 20 rainy days, while no rainfall is recorded in Izmir and Muğla in western Türkiye, Kırklareli and Edirne in the northwest, and Mardin, Batman, Şırnak and Siirt in the southeast.
The Mediterranean, Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia regions record increases of more than 100% in August rainfall compared with the same month last year.
Rainfall in the Mediterranean region rises 82% above normal and more than doubles year-on-year, while Black Sea rainfall increases 11% above normal and by more than 100% compared with August 2025.
Eastern Anatolia records rainfall 85% above normal and more than 100% higher than last year, while Southeastern Anatolia sees rainfall 6% above normal and more than 100% higher year-on-year.
Meanwhile, August rainfall falls 84% below normal in the Marmara region in northwestern Türkiye and 71% below normal in the Aegean region in western Türkiye.
Central Anatolia also records rainfall 7% below normal, although its August precipitation increases 18% compared with the same month last year.
