A survey has indicated that an overwhelming majority of the voters who support the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in the southeastern provinces of Turkey are opposed to the PKK terrorist organization's strategies, which include the digging of ditches and setting up barricades in those provinces, along with attempts to declare self-autonomy.
Two academics, Zahir Kızmaz from Fırat University in Elazığ and Nimet Teğin from Siirt University, carried out a survey conducting face-to-face interviews with 649 participants living in eight different provinces in Turkey's south and southeast regions, regarding the PKK's assertion of self-autonomy, terrorist activities and the impact of these policies on local Kurds.
According to the study, 80 percent of those who voted for the HDP in the Nov. 1 elections, corresponding to 82 percent of participants in the survey, said that they are opposed to the PKK's urban war strategies in the southeastern provinces. When asked about assertionsof self-rule in 13 different parts of the region, 74 percent of participant said they disagree.
The survey indicated that only 22 percent of participants said they would vote for the HDP if another election were held.
While 83 percent of participants said that the PKK's terrorist tactics will not bring peace to the region, 81 percent said that Kurds will gain nothing but harm from the terrorist organization.
A survey conducted in April by the Gezici Research Company, which strongly opposes the government, found that support for the HDP was at 7.3 percent; below the election threshold needed for a party to win seats in parliament.
A survey conducted by the Objective Research Center (ORC) indicated that 78.9 percent of Turkey's Kurdish population opposes the HDP and the PKK proposal for "self-governance" or a decentralized system which would offer an element of regional autonomy to Turkey's Kurds. Also, 70.8 percent of the Kurdish population consider the HDP to have direct political affiliations with the PKK terror organization, while 61 percent disagreed with the statement that the HDP is the sole representative of Turkey's Kurdish population.
