MHP's Bahçeli demands punishment for anyone plotting a new coup

Speaking at a weekly party meeting at Parliament Tuesday, the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli slammed allegations that there will be another coup attempt and said that those attempting it should be "ready to be buried."

Bahçeli said that after the July 15 coup attempt Turkey is still on a slippery slope and encouraged deputies to be fearless during this period. "Where the nation is fearless, representatives of the nation who fulfil democratic duties on behalf of the nation should also have no fear," he said.

Renewing his party's support for the government's decision to extend the state of emergency for 90 days, Bahçeli said that the conditions for extending it continue to influence all levels. "The July 15 FETÖ coup attempt weakened all state institutions and harmed the future prospects of the nation. What we have been witnessing and passing through are not easy to digest." he added. Commenting on the allegations that sleeper cells of the FETÖ terror cult will attempt another coup in November, MHP leader Bahçeli said that those plotting should be ready for the consequences: "(There is an allegation that) FETÖ sleeper cells will take up arms once again. This vicious rumor aims to create chaos and maintain pessimism in society." Referring to the $1 bills found on arrested FETÖ members, Bahçeli said that "those who are worth only $1 and try to come back should be ready to be buried. If they try again we will be waiting for them."

"On July 15, the Republic of Turkey turned a corner. FETÖ members infiltrated the state and then tried to collapse it. Our nation narrowly escaped and survived thanks to tremendous opposition at the last moment," he concluded.
