Julian Assange, the editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, has claimed that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Saudi Arabia prepared the ground for the creation of Daesh terrorist group.

Upon the release of a new series of leaked documents, Assange pointed out that the Soviet-Afghan war of 1980's was the starting event of the process which resulted in the formation of Daesh.

According to Assange, the CIA and Saudi Arabia had spent billions of dollars for arming the Afghan Mujahideen resistance against the Soviet Union, and this led to the emergence of groups such as the al- Qaida.

He said this event paved the way for 9/11 terror attacks, the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq which resulted in the creation of Daesh.

Assange refers to 1979, the year of the Iranian revolution and the beginning of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, as the beginning year of the modern era.

Wikileaks was set up in 2006 to allow whistleblowers to release anonymous documents and gained worldwide fame when it started to release U.S. State Department diplomatic cables from 2010.

Assange, the 45-year-old Australian whistleblower, took refuge inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London on June 19, 2012, in an attempt to avoid extradition to Sweden, where a judicial investigation was initiated against him in connection with allegations of sexual misconduct.
