Floriculture sector booms with Mother's Day

by Anadolu Agency

Osman Bağdatlıoğlu, the chairman of Ornamental Plants and Products Exporters Union, said they expect revenue of about $5 million from flowers which they export to 36 countries on the occasion of Mother's Day. In an interview with Anadolu Agency, Bağdatlıoğlu stated that they began flower exports to various European countries, adding that they exported flowers to Poland for the first time this year. According to Bağdatlıoğlu, flower exports cover many other countries including Hungary, the Netherlands and Germany. We expect revenue of some $5 million from the 50 million flowers that we export to 36 countries on the occasion of Mother's Day, Bağdatlıoğlu added. Light and dark pink carnations are the most preferred flower types.

Referring to flower imports that are carried out from the Netherlands and Kenya, Bağdatlıoğlu stressed that an inordinate amount of imports harms the floriculture industry.

Expressing that flowers are the sweetest gift for mothers, Bağdatlıoğlu criticized a commercial film which has been presented by a white goods company with the tagline of "Flowers again?" Flowers symbolize love, Bağdatlıoğlu said, expressing his sadness caused by commercial films where flowers are thrown away. Describing flowers as a symbol of nature, humans and love, Bağdatlıoğlu underscored that flowers need to be protected rather than thrown out. It should be noted that 300,000 people indirectly earn their living from the floriculture sector, it contributes greatly to our economy, he concluded.
