Turkey's unemployment rate rises to 10.2 percent in June

Turkey's unemployment rate reached double digits in June with 10.2 percent with an increase by 0.6 percentage points compared to same month of previous year. The number of unemployed people increased by 247,000 and reached 3.127 million.

According to the data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (Turkstat) on Monday, an increase of 0.8 percentage points took place compared to May.

Non-agricultural unemployment rate was 12.2 percent in June with 0.5 percentage points increase compared to June 2015. In the same period, youth unemployment rate covering persons aged 15-24 increased by 1.7 percentage points and reached 19.4 percent and the unemployment rate for persons aged 15-64 increased by 0.7 percentage points and reached 10.4 percent.

The employment rate remained unchanged at 47.1 percent despite an increase of 390,000, bringing the number of employed people to 27.651 million. Amid the jet crisis with Russia, which banned the importation of agricultural goods from Turkey, agricultural sector was the hardest hit sector, losing 421,000 jobs since June 2015. Non-agricultural employment increased by 811,000.

According to the distribution of employment by sector; 20.2 percent was employed in agriculture, 19.3 percent was in industry, 7.5 percent was in construction and 53.1 percent was in services. Employment in services increased by 2.1 percentage points and construction increased by 0.2 percentage points while agriculture decreased by 1.8 percentage points and industry decreased by 0.4 percentage points.

The labour force participation rate (LFPR) was 52.4 percent with 0.3 percentage points increase. The labor force increased by 637,000 and reached 30.778 million. LFPR was 72.3 percent for males and 33 percent for females with an increase of 0.7 percentage points.

The ratio of persons working without any social security relating to the main job was 34 percent with 0.6 percentage points decrease.

Seasonally adjusted employment rate was 46.2 percent with 0.5 percentage points decrease. Employed persons decreased by 222,000 and reached 27.128 million thousand persons compared with the previous period. Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 10.9 percent with 0.6 percentage point increase. The number of the unemployed reached 3.324 million with a 166,000 increase. Seasonally adjusted LFPR rate was 51.9 percent with 0.1 percentage point decrease.
