The Foreign Ministry commemorated the 152nd anniversary of the "Great Circassian Exile," as remembered on May 21 every year.
In a written statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgiç said that as a result of Tsarist Russia's invasion of the Caucasus throughout the 19th century, the region lost hundreds of thousands of its subjects, while many of the survivors immigrated to Anatolia.
"The disaster that has been recorded in history as the 'Great Circassian Exile' and is remembered on May 21 every year is imprinted on the memories and hearts of the Caucasian people. We remember with respect those who lost their lives in this atrocity that presented one of the biggest genocides in the history of humanity," Bilgiç said.
