In recent years, Turkey's new museums designed to meet international standards - have brought rapid momentum to museology based on the motto, 'From motionless to the heart of life'
The physical structure and service principles of museums are currently under intensive transformation in Turkey. Anatolia, a cradle of civilizations, is counting down the days to the opening of many glorious museums. Speaking to an Anatolian Agency (AA) reporter, General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums Deputy Manager, Zülküf Yılmaz, said, "For the last ten years, the foundations of new museums compliant with international standards were laid in Turkey."
The definition of museology was also changed, paving the way for museums to become a part of social life and open to interaction, rather than being stable and restricted venues. Yılmaz pointed to the positive impact of recent devel - opments regarding museums . "Turkey will have more mo d e r n museums that fulfill the requirements of the 21st century. Museums should consist of special areas for training and restoration workshops, large storage spaces sufficient for 40 to 50 years, shopping and dining facilities and large exhibition areas. In addition to new museums, the existing ones are being further improved upon. "Turkey's museums will no longer look strange. Established with an old-fashioned perspective, the museums that are rarely visited will undergo rapid transformation using our own resources," Yılmaz stated. The directorate is adopting new policies to give museums a unique identity in line with current museology practices.
There are reportedly 193 state museums, 195 private museums and 136 ancient ruins whose environmental planning has been completed under Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Taking into account the number of private museums, which reaches the thousands in developed countries such as the U.S. with 35,000 private museums, Yılmaz emphasized, "It is important to have a high number of museums, however, you also have to consider the quality issue. All our museums do not have the standards of a metropolitan or monumental museum; some of them are small and limited to one or two fields." Turkish museums should be evaluated under national standards. "There are countries with a high number of museums thanks to their established museology practice and financial resources," Yılmaz said. Each year, a significant increase is observed in the number of museum visitors across Turkey. Although this number mostly consists of educated people, more people from all educational backgrounds have been visiting museums in recent times. There are currently 65 museum projects under progress, some of which will be the new museums of Turkey. The exhibition areas of some museums will be renovated as well. The project "A Journey to History" includes Hatay Archeology Museum, Sanlıurfa Ha l e p l ibahç e Mosaic Museum, Van Urartu Museum and Çanakkale Troy Museum. Within the project's scope, museums will also hold social and cultural events in the evenings.
