The Trisha Brown Dance Company (TBDC), one of the most influential dance schools in New York, was founded in 1970 when Trisha Brown set out to work with her own group of dancers. The company is now regularly seen in the landmark opera houses of noted arts and culture capitals such as New York, Paris and London. Originally starting with solos and small group performances, the company now performs major works and collaborates with renowned visual artists and musicians such as Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd, Elizabeth Murray, Laurie Anderson, John Cage and Alvin Curran. We were lucky enough to witness the breathtaking postmodern dance show of the company's talented dancers on Saturday, Dec. 20 at İş Sanat, and Daily Sabah's İklim Arsiya sat down for an interview with Diane Madden, the associate artistic director of the group.
Daily Sabah: How has the Trisha Brown Dance Company evolved and grown since it began in 1970?
Diane Madden: Trisha Brown is a visual artist who uses dancers' bodies to sculpt forms in time and space. The creation of her company in 1970 allowed her to fulfill her choreographic vision. Her work has evolved through the contribution of many generations of excellent dance artists
DS: What innovative aspects is the Trisha Brown Dance Company planning on bringing to postmodern dance in the upcoming years?
DM: TBDC's goals are threefold and work toward advancing dance as an art form. The first is performance - sharing the work in site-specific contexts to reveal a newfound understanding of Brown's choreographic innovations. The second is education - the dissemination of Brown's ideas to be used in the creation and development of new dances. The third is archive - preserving and sharing the movement sketchbook of this major 20th century artist providing insight into her creative process.
DS: Can you tell us a little bit about the course content of the classes and workshops that TBDC offers?
DM: Our courses cover a wide range of populations and goals - dancer and non-dancer - from technique to the creative process. DS: What is the company's expectation from their performance in Turkey?
DM: We are very excited to develop our Turkish audience. DS: What can dance lovers expect from the show this December?
DM: Expect to be surprised by the physical ease as well as rigor, challenged by the transparency and depth of form and identify with the performance's humanity.
