Located on Kadir Has University's campus, Gallery Khas hosts a collective exhibition consisting of works by 13 contemporary artists
Located on Kadir Has University's Cibali Campus, Gallery KHAS is hosting a very important and interesting exhibition. Curated by Kadir Has University Vice Chancellor Hasan Bülent Kahraman as a part of the 14th Istanbul Biennial, "Hayır, Sandığınız Gibi Değil" (No, It Is Not What You Think It Is) is composed of works by contemporary Turkish artists.
The exhibition, which will run until Nov. 1, focuses on the work of 13 artists, including Ahmet Duru, Ahmet Polat, Ardan Özmenoğlu, Buğra Erol, Erdoğan Zümrütoğlu, Fırat Engin, Gözde Türkkan, Hale Tenger, Mustafa Horasan, Seçkin Pirim, Selçuk Ceylan, Sıtkı Kösemen and Orhan Cem Çetin. The featured works were selected from the collections of CI Editions, a special initiative of Contemporary Istanbul. Commenting on the exhibition's uniqueness, Kahraman said, "Contemporary art in Turkey is universal. The latest art generation produces striking artwork. These editions are presented and displayed for art buffs in various venues, and they have become universal through the fairs and biennials held in Turkey. CI initiated the important editions project last year, so we decided to display a selection of their collection."
Kahraman said their art is realistic in terms of patterns, structure and history. "This is one of our most important merits. Contemporary art is nourished from this tradition," Kahraman added. He said the rea
listic works are the backbone of Turkish contemporary art. "This is one of the reasons that Turkish contemporary art is a part of world contemporary art. However, the art's core is also composed of dreams, imagination and fiction. In the end, art is closely related to images. Regarding all these, it is obvious that contemporary art is an important vein in Turkish art." Although Kahraman thinks contemporary art is one of the most important aspects of Turkish art, he believes that this important vein has been neglected. "The world is intertwined with reality and fiction. I curated this exhibition with works that bring reality and dreams together to stress that both reality and dreams are not opposing concepts as we believe. This chaos and productive contradictions are thoroughly presented in this exhibition. This exhibition represents that everything is not as we think it is," Kahraman said.
