An exhibition titled "Cold Front from Balkans," featuring contemporary art of the Balkan's, is now open to visitors at the Pera Museum.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), the General Manager of the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation and Culture and Art Enterprises Özalp Birol said the exhibition has many interesting-modern artworks that were produced in Balkan countries. "The exhibition has brought together the works of artists from 10 Balkan countries hand-selected by our curators, Alenka Gregoric and Ali Akay, offering us an anthology of modern Balkan art. Artworks produced by artists from the Balkans are intriguing and unique," Birol said.
Curator Alenka Gregoric also emphasized that the exhibition offers diverse and unique artworks by different artists, adding that the pieces featured include themes such as the state and revolution in their works.
Gregoric said it is important that Istanbul is hosting this exhibition. "The best artists coming from the Balkan region are in this exhibition. You can find artworks of the young generation, who comprehensively incorporate their regions from the 1960s through the 1970s and the 1980s. The exhibition has more than 40 artworks by more than 40 artists," Gregoric said.
Co-curator Ali Akay said the artworks in the exhibition have been created with the influence of nature and climate as well, "Cold weather. ...from the Balkans is a phrase we often heard from weather forecasts, which lingered in our ears, but we never took it seriously. However, climate change is even stronger than the geography where we live and will affect our lives and future. We could run out of water in the next 30 years or even suffer from famine," he said.
Noting that the exhibition can contribute to build better relations with Balkan countries, Akay added, "When I was young, the culture of the Balkans was a part of Istanbul. Today, we have lost this culture, especially in recent years, and it wasn't related to politics," Akay said.
Held in cooperation of the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana, the exhibition offers videos, photographs, drawings and installation works by many artists including: Maja Bajevic, Braco Dimitrijevic, Vadim Fishkin, Irwin, Laibach, Mladen Miljanovic, Ivan Moudov, Oho, Dan Perjovschi, Mladen Stilinovic, Ulay and Sislej Xhafa.
