The town of Filyos in Zonguldak will soon see the realization of an idea that dates back to the time of Sultan Abdülhamid II.
The Filyos Port, which will be accompanied by an Industry Zone, will be among the highest-funded works of a state investment program.
The plan is based on the "General Production Report in Anatolia" prepared during the Hamidian era.
According to this plan, an international trade and industry zone will be created, allowing ships to be loaded and unloaded by entering into the Gökçebey district through water-trenches from Filyos. A Cabinet decision released on Sept. 8, 2012 announced the valley would become a Combined Industry Zone and construction of the Filyos Port, allotted TL 810 million, would commence.
The 2014 State Investment Program started this process with an allotted TL 140.6 million.
The Combined Industry Zone will span 606 hectares and provide employment for 10,000 to 15,000 people. Zonguldak Governor Ali Kaban told Andolu Agency "The Filyos Port and Filyos Combined Industry Zone are part of an investment programme". Port bidding on March 19. Bidding for projects related to the port will start on March 19.
"The port will be erected on a 589 hectare onshore and 117-hectare offshore site," said Kaban. "When we exclude the joint projects, the Filyos Port Project fund makes up 46 percent of the finances provided for our city. The Filyos Industry Zone is part of the same investment programme. The mapping process is currently kicking off. The shore edge line studies will be started by the first quarter of this year with a fund for geological surveys of TL 1.5 million.
