Industry and Development Ministry to be established

by Mehmet Ali Berber

Political parties have begun announcing their election bulletins ahead of the June 7 general elections. According to its bulletin, the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is planning to initiate a new economic model in the coming terms that will be based on four main tenets. To establish this model, a series of reforms will be taken for development and industries. These four main tenets will be development, employment, industry-trade and research and development. Within this economic reform package, the structure and organization of the ministries will also be altered. For example, various divisions striving to improve development within many other ministries will be united under the umbrella of a new ministry, the Ministry of Industry and Development. Training, which is one of the most important assets for the economy, labor and R&D will be the ministry's priorities, ensuring that the overall priority of the entire economy is a great leap in industry and innovations.

The responsibilities of ministries will be restructured in order to ensure more coordinated work and solution-focused planning. As the first move to improve industry and development, the Science, Industry and Technology Ministry and Development Ministry will merge to form the new ministry, which will serve as the backbone of the economy. Furthermore, units in other ministries working for science and technology will be united under the new ministry that will assume the R&D activities of the public sector.

The Economy Ministry will be restructured and merged with the Customs and Trade Ministry. A more effective model that will handle both domestic and international trade as a whole will be initiated as well. With the implementation of these steps, the local economy and international economy will not be handled by separate ministries. Customs authorities will act more as strong support units instead of a department, and this unit will operate in coordination with both economic units and security units.

The "investment of earnings into education and training" motto, which had a crucial part in the successful ruling of the AK Party government within past few years, will be more effectively and actively implemented. The new ministry, which will assume R&D activities, will also include areas dedicated to science and technology. Moreover, an approach based on investment and development will be supported by an agenda based on technology and investment.

Priority goals will be improving the Fatih Project and smart board application, implementing curricula with technology as its priority and ensuring a notable improvement in software by including simple software language and programing education before university. A new curriculum like the ones being used in Baltic countries, which prioritizes information technologies, will also be implemented.
