The Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry announced that it is starting the "pack what you cannot eat" application in restaurants in order to prevent food waste.
The undersecretary of the ministry, Nihat Pakdil, said that most of the food presented in restaurants goes to waste. This application will be part of the fight against food waste campaign by the ministry. Its efforts were first focused on wasting bread with an ongoing campaign for the past three years, and now it will fight against all kinds of food waste starting from the harvest.
Speaking to Sabah newspaper, Pakdil said that there will be signs encouraging people to "pack and take home any leftovers" or to "feed the stray animals with the leftovers." He also added that the total calories of each dish will be added to restaurant menus in order to fight obesity.
Pointing out that Turkey hosted the G20 Ministers of Agriculture Summit, Pakdil said that at the end of June, G20 countries will be issuing an action plan to fight against food waste and Turkey will act as the leader. Since G20 countries represent two-thirds of the world's population, 75 percent of global trade and 70 percent of the world's agricultural economy, Pakdil said as the population of the world is expected to rise to 9 billion in 2050, precautions should be taken against food waste.
He also underlined that there is serious waste after the harvest and therefore, with a campaign that will take place all around Turkey, the ministry will also be training farmers regarding food waste.
