Doğtaş aims to combine furniture with tech

Doğtaş Kelebek, an important player in the furniture industry with two popular brands, is aiming to bring technology to furniture while continuing to become a global player. The research and development and design center of Doğtaş Kelebek is making technologic steps in the furniture sector keeping up with new technologic changes that develop people's lives. The furniture sector has recently benefitted from technology. The company plans to produce armchairs and tables that can charge a mobile phone. The company believes the furniture sector will undergo a technologic transformation.

While Doğtaş Kelebek is producing its pioneering designs for Doğtaş in Çanakkale/Biga and for Kelebek Mobilya in Düzce. Doğtaş Kelebek continues to grow in Europe and is active in 32 countries.

At the end of 2012, while Doğtaş Kelebek's consolidated turnover was TL 204 million ($71 million), at the end of 2014 it moved up to TL 322 million in a 58 percent growth spurt. By 2018, Doğtaş Kelebek is predicting three-fold growth, TL 1 billion in turnover and a place as a furniture giant known throughout the world. Doğtaş Kelebek has 1,255 employees. It has 373 stores with the Doğtaş - 202, Kelebek Mobilya - 107 and Kelebek Mutfak - 64, at home and abroad.

Today, Doğtaş Kelebek, which has 76 foreign stores, is an important global player. The company develops new products and designs both for small houses in Europe and large houses in the Middle East. Moreover, Doğtaş Kelebek is planning to open 20 new stores abroad next year.

Doğtaş Kelebek is going down a different road by investing in research And development and a design center.

The number of people employed in the furniture sector as a sub-industry in Turkey is almost 500,000 and furniture production is undertaken in 61 cities. Turkey is a real furniture country and an important player in the world. Turkey's furniture exports were around $2.4 billion last year. Turkey's furniture export rate has increased 16 percent over the last two years. It is expected that this ratio will increase in the upcoming period. The Turkish furniture sector is one of the few sectors that doesn't have a current account deficit. Turkey holds a 1.5 percent stake in the World Furniture Trade List.

According to MOSDER's 2015 Q2 export sales number, despite the decline in Q1, the furniture sector continued to grow. Despite the negative environment in neighbor countries, Turkish furniture sector closed Q2 of 2015 with an export sales number of $ 1.1 billion. According to the Centre for Industrial Studies (CSIL), Turkey has gone up from 15th to 12th among exporting countries in the world.
