Turkcell Assistant General Manager İlker Kuruöz announced that Turkcell is aiming to invest TL 18 billion ($6.3 billion) through 2018, which will ensure an additional 175,000 direct or indirect employment opportunities in the sector. Speaking at a press conference organized by Turkcell, Kuruöz said the company was confident in its 4.5G project and will make a difference in the sector, as Turkcell has become the GSM operator offering the fastest Internet connection rates and capacities in mobile communication. Kuruöz said Turkcell's advantage was winning the largest part of the spectrum in Information and Communication Technologies Authority's (BTK) 4.5G bidding last year. "We paid the highest amount, 1.6 billion euros; therefore, we won 47 percent of the spectrum, and the remaining was shared among our competitors."
Comparing the 4.5G technology highway lanes, Kuruöz said in order to reach high speeds on the highway, a powerful engine is needed. What determines the pace of 4.5G technology is infrastructure and device functionality. Kuruöz added that they will contribute significantly to the digitalization of Turkey and that Turkcell subscribers will benefit from the fastest data speeds. "In terms of capacity, we will be able to fulfill requests in the fastest manner possible," Kuruöz said.
Stressing that a 2-gigabyte video can be downloaded in 780 seconds via 3G mobile networking technology but that the download period will drop to 54 seconds with the introduction of 4.5G, Kuruöz also said subscribers who switch to 4.5G will be able to use the same data packages for the same price.
