Ordu Governor İrfan Balkanlıoğlu said the Ordu-Giresun Airport, the first airport to have been built on an artificial island in Turkey as well as in Europe, will begin offering international flights as of June.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Balkanlıoğlu said the airport has served more than 400,000 passengers since it became operational on May 22, 2015. Balkanlıoğlu also stated that there is great interest in the airport, from which 16 flights leave per day, adding, "The Ordu-Giresun Airport has outperformed many airports in terms of volume, despite only being in service for less than a year."
Stressing that private airlines have taken great interest in the airport, Balkanlıoğlu said the number of flights from the airport will continue to increase. "So, ticket prices will fall and people will be able to fly to Istanbul and Ankara any time they wish."
According to Balkanlıoğlu, the airport will begin offering direct international flights as of June. The international destinations include Germany, Austria, Saudi Arabia and Cyprus.
Balkanlıoğlu said there is increasing demand for international flights from the Ordu-Giresun Airport, adding that it aims to attract 1 million passengers annually. He noted that this goal can easily be achieved over the next several years.
