Police in Northern Ireland said they are investigating after human waste was found in empty Coca-Cola cans at one of the compan's factories in Lisburn.
According to the Belfast Telegraph's report, the Hellenic Bottling Company factory's night-shift workers discovered cans filled with human waste. Coca-Cola had suspended production last week at the plant after several machines became clogged .
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed on Tuesday that it opened an investigation to find how the feces ended up in the soda cans.
"Detectives are investigating an incident at commercial premises in the Lisburn area following reports that a consignment of containers delivered to the premises had been contaminated. The investigation is at an early stage and there are no further details available at this time," a PSNI spokesman said.
The company made a statement to Belfast Telegraph, saying ""Coca-Cola takes the safety and quality of our products extremely seriously.
"We are aware of an incident involving empty cans at our plant in Knockmore Hill, Lisburn. We are treating this matter extremely seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation in co-operation with the PSNI."
The soft drink giant added that the incident was an "isolated" one, will not affect any products that are currently on sale and none of the cans contaminated with feces had reached the market in Northern Ireland.
