Electric and hybrid cars continued to command the Turkish market, holding a 52% share of the market in the first nine months of the year, according to a report on Sunday.
In Türkiye, electric and hybrid automobiles combined accounted for approximately 52% of the total market, with sales of 326,035 units in January-September, according to the report by Anadolu Agency (AA) citing industry data.
Overall car sales decreased by 15.45% year-over-year to 627,977 in the January-September period, while light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 5.12% to 175,488, according to the data compiled from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD).
During this period, 258,453 gasoline-powered and 204,956 hybrid automobiles were sold. The number of diesel automobile sales was 34,520, while the number of LPG-powered automobile sales was 8,969. Sales of fully electric automobiles powered only by electricity were recorded at 120,329.
When vehicles equipped with “extended range” systems are included, the number of electric automobile sales during this period reached 121,079, with a market share of 19.3%.
Accordingly, in the first nine months of the year, sales of gasoline-powered automobiles decreased by 23.5%, diesel automobiles by 40.7%, electric automobiles by 9.5%, and hybrids by 0.8%, while LPG-powered automobile sales increased by 44.7% during this period.
Experts state that the main reason for the decline in diesel car sales is that global manufacturers continue the process of ending diesel automobile production and, therefore, no new diesel automobiles are being introduced to the market.
At the same time, rising diesel prices around the globe could have impact on a demand for diesel vehicles.
Moreover, the data shows that the share of gasoline-powered automobiles in sales, which was 45.5% in the January-September period of last year, declined to 41.2% in the same period this year.
During this period, the share of diesel automobiles declined from 7.8% to 5.5%, while the share of LPG-powered automobiles increased from 0.8% to 1.4%.
During the same period, the share of total sales accounted for by electric cars increased from 18% to 19.3%, while the share of hybrids increased from 27.8% to 32.6%.
Like this, the share of electric and hybrid vehicles reached 51.9%, with sales reaching 326,035 units. Thus, more than half of the automobiles sold in Türkiye were electric and hybrid vehicles.
In September, a total of 15,128 electric automobiles were sold. Compared with the same period last year, electric vehicle sales increased by 17.1%. The market share of these cars in September was calculated at 23.7%.
In the same month, 17,911 hybrid automobiles were sold, with their market share recorded at 28.1%.
