The increase in electric vehicle (EV) use in Türkiye, combined with the expansion of charging infrastructure and the resulting growth in charging demand, pushed electricity consumption by EVs to a record high in July, according to a report on Wednesday.
The charging volume stood at just shy of 90,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) in July, setting an all-time high.
A total of 89,947 MWh of electricity was consumed for charging electric vehicles in July, said a report by Anadolu Agency (AA) citing data from the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK).
Consumption increased by approximately 97% compared with 45,605 MWh in the same month last year, while it rose 24% compared with June.
Approximately 3.33 million charging sessions were carried out at charging stations across the country in July, the report said.
The record data not only demonstrates how the growing use of electric vehicles is translating into higher charging demand but also highlights the increasing importance of fast-charging points.
As of the end of July, Türkiye had 46,665 charging points, of which 20,461 were DC (direct current) charging points, accounting for approximately 44% of the total.
Still, these DC points accounted for 84.94% of total charging electricity consumption in July.
The dominance of fast charging was also reflected in the number of charging sessions. 79.08% of all charging sessionsduring the month took place at DC charging points.
Thus, although fast-charging points make up less than half of the country's total charging network, they accounted for a significant share of both electricity consumption and charging activity.
With the growth of the electric vehicle market, fast-charging infrastructure – which enables shorter charging times, particularly during long-distance journeys – has emerged as one of the key factors supporting EV adoption.
As electric vehicles become more widespread, the use of renewable energy in the charging sector has also become an increasingly important issue.
In July, 65% of the approximately 3.33 million charging sessions took place at YEK-G-certified green charging stations.
In other words, roughly two out of every three charging sessions during the month were carried out at green charging stations.
The significant share of green charging stations in overall charging activity highlights the sector as one of the areas where electric mobility and the energy transition intersect.
At the same time, the data indicates that Türkiye's charging infrastructure continued to expand rapidly in parallel with the country's growing electric vehicle market.
The number of charging points nationwide increased from 12,084 at the beginning of 2024 to 26,462 at the beginning of 2025, and then to 46,665 by the end of July this year.
As a result, Türkiye's charging network nearly quadrupled over a period of 2.5 years.
As of the end of July, 26,204 charging points were AC, while 20,461 were DC.
Although the expansion of the network was accompanied by rapid growth in fast-charging infrastructure, July's figures showed that DC charging points accounted for a much larger share of electricity consumption and charging activity than their numerical share of the network would suggest.
The data also reveals that major cities accounted for a significant share of electricity consumption for EV charging.
In July, Istanbul alone accounted for approximately 23% of total EV charging consumption, ranking first nationwide. It was followed by Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, and Antalya.
Istanbul's approximately 23% share on its own further demonstrates the concentration of EV charging demand in major urban centers.
