The pro-democracy Turkish people, who stood against the bloody coup attempt, made history on the night of July 15
On the night of July 15, 2016, tanks rolled into Ankara and Istanbul, jets flew low over these cities, soldiers tried to occupy major state buildings and communications centers and a group of rebel soldiers announced they had taken over power and established a junta called the "Peace at Home Council."
Then, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called upon the nation to rise to the occasion and flock into the streets to counter the coup. That is exactly what a brave and honorable nation did. People took to the streets, occupied city squares, moved to encircle all the buildings being occupied by the soldiers, and barricaded the military barrack entrances with heavy construction machines provided by municipalities and with the help of special police forces countered the coup.
The soldiers opened fire on the crowds, tanks rolled over people, jets bombed them and helicopter gunships strafed the crowds. Jets left a part of our Parliament in rubble... 248 died and more than 2,000 were wounded as the nation defied the coup plotters. The people stood up against the tanks, set up human shields to stop the bullets and saved their democracy on a legendary night. Meanwhile the coup plotters tried to kill President Erdoğan and his family a couple of times during that night.
The coup leaders were caught red-handed. It became apparent that they had received their orders from Fethullah Gülen, the so-called cleric who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania. The confessions and the documents that have been recovered by security forces all show that Gülen used his terrorist outfit, which has infiltrated the military, the police and the judiciary as well as all the sensitive state departments, to stage the coup. The coup plotters, who included the aides of the top generals, even admitted to forcing their commanders to sign papers supporting the coup and offering to have them talk to Gülen...
All these are not scenes from a Hollywood-inspired thriller or a horror story. They unfortunately happened in Turkey on July 15...
Yet, when we look into Western media we are shocked to see all kinds of distortions, gossip and fabrications. The so-called responsible newspapers and TV stations that pride themselves on serving the cause of freedom, liberties and justice are in fact serving the coup plotters.
They are pretending as if the nightmare we lived through on the night of July 15 did not happen. Some even go as far as to suggest the coup was a stage act by the government to strengthen its hold on Turkey... This is ridiculous. It is unacceptable. It is like suggesting that the U.S. administration was behind the al-Qaida attacks against the Twin Towers on 9/11.
The Turkish people should have been applauded by the western media for its brave stance against the plot and how it halted a bloody coup. They should have acknowledged the heavy price the Turkish people paid to defend their democracy. The European Union should have said they are proud to be associated with such a nation that has stood up to preserve supreme values. Yet this did not happen.
On the contrary we see with shock that some people are busy talking about the rights of the coup plotters and Gülen. This is not only an unfriendly act against Turkey and the Turkish people but an indicator that they support a part of this treachery.
