2015 begins with surprise tax hike for liquor and tobacco

According to the new regulations on Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) announced Thursday, the ÖTV rates for liquor and tobacco have been increased in 2015. The tax hike is expected to increase the prices of liquor by 10 to 25 percent and cigarette prices by 3 to 15 percent.
Producers are likely to reflect the tax hike to consumers.
The largest minimum fixed tax increase was made on rakı, Turkish liquor, with 15 percent, followed by gin and vodka with 12 percent, and wine, beer and others with 10 percent.
The fixed tax for tobacco products was increased from TL 0.1366 to TL 0.1866.
