Turkey's January unemployment at 11.3 percent with seasonal effects

The unemployment rate in January was 11.3 percent, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (Turkstat) yesterday, owing to the pressure of seasonal effects. In January 2015 there were 3.26 million unemployed people aged 15 and over, up 454,000 compared to January 2014, an increase of 1 percent. TÜİK also reported that the employment rate is rising in line with the unemployment rate. The employment rate was 44.3 percent, a 1.1 percent increase from January 2014. The number of seasonally employed workers increased, lowering the number of unemployed seasonal workers. The unemployment rate for seasonal workers was 10.3 percent in January, a 0.1 percentage decrease from January 2014.The seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate was 51.1 percent, a 0.1 percent increase compared to January 2014. The highest jump for employment in economic activity was in the industry sector, seeing an increase of 83,000 jobs. Almost 1.5 million more people joined the labor force in January 2015 compared to January 2014. The labor force participation rate was 50 percent, a 1.8 percent increase from the previous year. The labor force participation rate was 70.5 percent for men, a 1.2 percent increase, and 29.9 percent for women, a 2.3 percent increase.
