Turkey and Qatar are jointly developing an e-commerce platform as agreed on a cooperation protocol signed between the Turkish Post (PTT) and Qatar Postal Services. The platform's website (www.turkishsouq.com) was recently launched at the International e-Commerce Conference in Antalya, organized by the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs, and Communications and the PTT. Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Minister Ahmet Arslan, Qatar's Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim Saif Ahmed al Sulaiti, PTT Chairman Kenan Bozgeyik and Qatar Post Chairman and Managing Director Faleh al Naemi were all present at the inauguration ceremony held at the Antalya Maxx Royal Hotel.
Speaking at the event, Minister Ahmet Arslan said: "I've met Qatari Minister al Sulaiti three times over the last 15 days. We have discussed more cooperation and took some important steps, especially in regards to the e-commerce platform." Arslan said the turnover in Turkey's e-commerce sector last year was around TL30 billion ($7.589 billion), which they are looking to take up to TL 50 billion this year. He said these figures showed how big the e-commerce platform is. "Within the framework of our cooperation, work on the e-commerce platform has been completed in Qatar and is currently undergoing test operations," Arslan said, adding that the platform will officially launch on Jan. 1, 2018.
Stating that the ongoing process has continued in the direction of land and combined transport, regarding the triple transit transportation between Turkey, Qatar, and Iran, the transport minister also confirmed that besides Istanbul, Qatar Airways will now be flying to Trabzon, Adana, Bodrum, and Antalya, as well.
The foundation of the cooperation between the PTT and Qatar Post in e-commerce was laid at the 26th Universal Postal Congress held in Istanbul between Sept. 20 and Oct. 7, 2016. A bilateral cooperation agreement was signed between the PTT and Qatar Post at the congress.
Later, on April 19, 2017, the two entities signed an "E-Commerce Cooperation Protocol" at the EXPO Turkey by Qatar trade fair.
Within the scope of the protocol, the e-commerce platform (www.turkishsouq.com) was developed where Turkish products could be sold in Qatar and vice versa. Thus, products on the PTT's national e-commerce platform (www.epttavm.com) will also be offered to users in Qatar via the new website.
