CHP leaves out populist pledges as security tops electoral manifesto

by Daily Sabah

As the public waits for the political parties to announce their electoral manifestos for the approaching Nov. 1 elections, the Republican People's Party (CHP) aims to announce its electoral manifesto on Sept. 30. It has been reported by sources that the CHP is revising its manifesto and aiming to focus solely on actions to be taken to end the increased terror activities. Though CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's recent remarks conveying the issue with the PKK terrorist organization were harshly criticized by former Vice Chairman Onur Öymen, claiming that the solution can only be found by the government, it has been reported that the CHP will urge the issue to be taken up by Parliament as part of the electoral campaign.

Similar to the Nationalist Movement Party's (MHP) pledge, the CHP will also focus on increasing the minimum wage. According to sources close to the CHP, the party will once again introduce a number of economic pledges as it did during the June 7 elections. In addition to economic promises, the main opposition party also focuses on rights and freedoms in its manifesto, while explaining the "Central Turkey" project, which is expected by the CHP to create 2.2 million jobs in the next 20 years.

The CHP will also alter its election slogan, which was "For a Livable Turkey" during the June 7 elections, and is now to be changed to "People first, Unity First, Turkey First." Kılıçdaroğlu, who will spend his Qurban Bayram (Feast of Sacrifice), also known as Eid al-Adha, visiting six European countries in efforts to obtain Turkish expat votes, will introduce deputy candidates during a meeting on Sept. 30 in the Ankara Chamber of Commerce Congress Center. Planning to hold nearly 30 election meetings across Turkey, Kılıçdaroğlu will also make direct contact with locals and meet with the public one-on-one.
