The Kremlin's press secretary, Dmitri Peskov, said the South Stream natural gas pipeline project was cancelled in 2014 due to the unconstructive stance of the European Commission, this there are currently no ongoing works regarding the project.
According to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, Peskov also added in his statement that the South Stream Project is not expected to continue at this point. The Russian energy giant Gazprom had proposed the construction of the Turkish Stream pipeline project instead of the South Stream project in light of the developments. On Nov. 24, 2015, Turkey downed a Russian SU-34 military jet since the aircraft in question was violating Turkish airspace, which caused the relations between the two countries to become tense. As a result, the Turkish Stream project was cancelled on Dec. 3, 2015. Both of these suspended projects aimed to carry 63 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas to Europe.
