The research, exhibition and publication project "Solar Fantastic" explores the rich and fantastical historical narratives binding the modernity of Mexico and Turkey.
Sun worship in both Turkic and Mayan cultures served as a bridge for this comparative contemporary study of two very different yet very similar modernization projects: Post-revolutionary Mexico and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's Turkish Republic.
The multidisciplinary "Solar Fantastic" project combines shared interests in ancient, modern and contemporary art as well as history, linguistics, archaeology and anthropology. Directed by Övül Durmuşoğlu and art historian James Oles, "Solar Fantastic" invites various artists and researchers in a series of talks and film screenings beginning in Turkey that will continue in Mexico in November.
The free and open-to-all event will be held on Sept. 28 at SALT Ulus and Sept. 30 at SALT Galata. The project was organized with the support of the Jumex Foundation, Turkish Cultural Foundation, Mexican Embassy in Turkey and the Turkish Embassy in Mexico.
