To boost food tourism, a new culinary program was launched last week in the southeastern Gaziantep province, whose culinary heritage was added to UNESCO's Creative Cities Network in December.
Better culinary tourism strategies raise the purchases of international tourists. Average tourists who spend $150 a day can reach $270 when they spend more on food. The program, Sustainable Professional Gastronomy Education, will improve food quality while introducing international standards to the city's dishes. Run by the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality and the Gastronomy and Tourism Association (GASTURDER), the program was launched at the city's culinary art education center. The education will improve food and beverage companies in all aspects. Speaking at the launch event, Mayor Fatma Şahin said that the program is a combination of theory and practice, adding that professional chefs from around Turkey will come to Gaziantep to contribute to the program.
Şahin said: "Gaziantep's cuisine is internationally renowned but we should better use the potential of Anatolia and the city's local dishes. This potential can be turned into a national income resource." GASTURDER Chairman Songül Toprak Alisinaoğlu also said that they are working to keep the city's culinary heritage alive and better promote it to the whole world. "The program will improve the food sector in service, product, hygiene and work safety," she said. The first stage of the program has 150 trainees who will take the two-and-a-half-month courses.
