Başakşehir takes its throne back in Turkish Super League

As Spor Toto Super League's 22nd week came to a close on Monday with Gençlerbirliği beating Göztepe 3-0, Medipol Başakşehir has regained the top spot from Galatasaray.

After only a week in the driver's seat, Galatasaray dropped to second place after it lost to Kasımpaşa 2-1 on Sunday evening. Despite taking the lead in the 37th minute with a beautiful finesse shot by Garry Rodrigues, Galatasaray was unable to stay in front. The Lions committed a penalty in the last minute of the first half to let Kasımpaşa's Mbaye Diagne equalize.

Goals were not the only important element in the first half, as Galatasaray's Bafetimbi Gomis seemed to pass out in the 15th minute. The Frenchman quickly got up and he was re-subbed back in the match after that scary moment.

Galatasaray was unable to convert numerous chances in the second half, and paid the price in the 80th minute, as Kasimpasa's Bengali Koita kicked a great volley into the back of the net.

The defeat cost Galatasaray the top spot in the league, as Medipol Başaksehir defeated Trabzonspor on Sunday afternoon thanks to a goal from striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Galatasaray is now tied for second place with Fenerbahçe, who defeated Alanyaspor 3-0 on Saturday, with the help of Brazilian Giuliano scoring a brace. Both Istanbul clubs have racked up 44 points in 22 matches and Başakşehir, on the other hand, increased their points total to 46 to lead the league.

On Friday evening, Beşiktaş dropped two points in Konya as they drew with Konyaspor 1-1. The Black Eagles are now in fourth place with 41 points.

The league's 23nd match week will see a very important derby between Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş on Sunday. Galatasaray will host Bursaspor on Friday in the week's opening match while leader Başakşehir are set to host Gençlerbirliği on Monday.
