A new project, initiated by Istanbul Municipality, has been announced that will give a face-lift to Istanbul's famous tourist area, Beyazıt Square.

The historic square, which is also home to Beyazıt Mosque and the old-books bazaar, Sahaflar Çarşısı, has been turned into a huge construction site.

The stores in the area, which are owned by the Municipality, will be demolished and their property space will be added to the size of the square.

Previously, the Darülfünun Underpass in the Vezneciler district of Istanbul was raised to 4.70 meters, as its previous 2.90 meters height was found insufficient, which cost the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality five million liras. Its name was also changed to Vezneciler Underpass.
