The World Health Organization (WHO) recently announced that of the more than 130 million child births each year, an estimated 303,000 result in the mother's death, 2.6 million stillbirths and another 2.7 million dead within the first 28 days of birth. "Far too many women and children are still dying in childbirth from preventable causes often linked to poor quality of care," said Marie-Paule Kieny, WHO assistant director-general of health systems and innovation, in a press release. The major causes of maternal and newborn complications and deaths include post-partum hemorrhage, infection, obstructed labor, preeclampsia and birth asphyxia. The April data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) showed that the rate of babies born alive in Turkey has risen about 3.6 percent compared to 2013, while the number of babies dying before reaching 1 month was more than 14,000 last year.
