Burnout syndrome big threat to marriage meltdown

"I'm completely burned out. My battery is flat!" More and more people are saying these kinds of phrases as burnout syndrome has become a disease of modern societies. Characterized as chronic stress that people are unable to deal with, burnout directly affects mood and poses a threat to marriages.

Ferhan Bıçaklar, the president of the Turkish Marriage and Family Consultants Association, said: "Marriages are a long-term relationship and are under the influence of children, family, friends, traumas and financial difficulties. When these elements come together and bring despair, burnout syndrome may develop, resulting in divorce." Pointing out that depression and burnout syndrome are different conditions, Bıçaklar said that couples have to think of new approaches to revive the lost energy in a marriage. In patients with burnout syndrome, pleasure centers in the brain fail to create happiness-inducing chemicals, leading a partner things like social media addiction or not taking care of their children as well as they should. "In most cases, couples find themselves shopping. We see more couples spending time in shopping malls. The more they spend money unconsciously, the more it brings more financial problems, which is another aspect deteriorating relationships," Bıçaklar added.

According to the Association for Psychological Science, burnout syndrome is the fatigue, cynicism and professional inefficacy that comes with work-related stress. Treatments include regulating emotions, increased cognitive flexibility and mindfulness, all of which may help ward off burnout in susceptible individuals.
