Studies have shown that signs of autism can emerge in babies as young as 6-12 months old. However, most professionals who specialize in the disorder will not attempt to make a definite diagnosis until 18 months as autism symptoms can continue to emerge - or fade away - until around 24 months.
Early diagnosis of autism plays an important role in a child's future. Bearing this in mind, the Tohum Autism Foundation joined forces with the Istanbul Development Agency and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and more than 9,000 children from 19-36 months old underwent autism scan tests throughout 2017 to create a model for future diagnoses.
The project is very important as cases of autism increase every year. Today, one in every 68 babies is born with a risk of autism, while every 20 minutes a child is diagnosed with autism around the world.
With early diagnosis and proper education, the symptoms of autism can be controlled in almost 50 percent of children exhibiting early signs.
With the project spearheaded by the Tohum Autism Foundation, state institutions offering social services are able to raise awareness for the early diagnosis of autism and coordinate with foundations specializing in autism and special education for autistic children.
