A court in the western city of Eskişehir sentenced a university student to three years in prison for torturing a cat to death before releasing a video of the torture on social media. Mustafa Can Aksoy was initially released pending trial last year. The video showed the defendant mutilating the cat, whom he blamed for defecating on his bed. Animal rights activists initiated a campaign for the student to be given prison time. Aksoy pleaded guilty and expressed regret. He said he still had a cat and dog as pets and would not do that if he was "a bad person." The judge ruled for a three-year prison term, the maximum limit for the crime.
