The Coast Guard detained on Monday 15 Egyptian fishermen accused of illegal fishing off the coast of Mersin, a Mediterranean Turkish province.
Authorities launched a raid on two Egyptian-flagged boats that illegally crossed into Turkish waters. The fishermen were engaged in bottom trawling in a season when fishing is banned in Turkish waters.
They were fined over TL 105,000 ($37,612) and the Coast Guard confiscated crates of caught fish and fishing tools. The fishermen will be deported.
