The beating of a pregnant woman in a park in the western Manisa province has sparked outrage against violence targeting women.
On Wednesday, four-month pregnant Ebru Tireli, 32, was doing her morning workout at a park in Manisa's Turgutlu district when a suspect approached her and told her not to work out in the park again. The suspect then began hitting Tireli, causing her to fall to the ground and it was then the assailant proceeded to kicking her repeatedly.
She claimed the unknown assailant had also struck her on the head with his shoe.
Tireli said she pleaded with him and told him she was pregnant, but he continued kicking before leaving after the woman cried for help.
The incident has renewed fears of violence against women. It comes just weeks after another woman in Istanbul was kicked on bus by a man for "wearing shorts."
People took to social media on Thursday, condemning the incident and calling for an investigation. "Ebru Tireli is not alone" was a popular hashtag on social media, as users blamed lenient sentences for breeding similar violent incidents.
Additionally, local media outlets reported that police have closed in on three suspects after launching an investigation into the incident.
