Samsun City Museum ranked among Europe's most prestigious museums

Samsun City Museum, which was established by the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality with the motto "Living City, Living Museum," and serves as a bridge between the city's past and present, has achieved important success. The museum advanced to the finals at the 20th Luigi Micheletti Awards, which is the European prize for innovative museums, and was chosen among the six most-prestigious museums in Europe.A total of 15 museums from 14 countries that advanced to the finals gave presentations at the 20th annual Luigi Micheletti Awards, organized by a joint museum platform, the European Museum Academy (EMA).
Turkey, Australia, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Ireland, Macedonia, Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland and the U.K. were invited to the presentation that took place in Brescia, Italy from May 7-10. The Samsun Metropolitan Municipality applied for the award, and the head of the municipality's Culture and Social Affairs Department, Necmi Çamaş, gave a presentation about the museum at the semi-finals. The presentation titled "Living City, Living Museum" was highly applauded by the other participants. After the presentation, Çamaş received a certificate for their participation.
Following the other presentations, the six most prestigious museums of Europe were announced by the jury. While the Netherlands' National Archives Museum was granted the 2015 Prestige Award, Samsun City Museum, Denmark's Marine Museum, Germany's Ozeaneum, Italy's Magma Demri Arts Museum and Slovenia's Ethnography Museum were chosen as Europe's most prestigious museums.Samsun City Museum is a fine example of an institution protecting the values of a city and passing them to the next generations without any commercial purposes. As it is integrated into Samsun's social life, the museum that offers children's activities and holds successful and intricate exhibitions, has been crowned with its new honor and has become the first city museum in Turkey to receive one.
