It has only been a few weeks since Mattel launched a transformative collection of Barbies in three different sizes - tall, curvy and petite - along with various eye colors, hairstyles, trendy outfits and even flat feet.
Recently, Nigerian Haneefah Adam, 24, has taken social media by storm with her innovation, the "hijarbie," a Barbie in hijab, the heascarf worn by Muslim women as part of the religious faith, appearing in gorgeous outfits. Her Instagram account features hijab-wearing dolls in many colorful and chic clothes.
"I want 'hijarbie' to inspire the Muslim girl child. It's about having a doll that looks like her, that represents her own cultural and religious background," she told BuzzFeed, adding that the dolls are inspired by the normal, every-day look of a hijab-wearing girl. In one of the hijarbie photos, the doll appears in a navy blue maxi skirt with gold clutch and veil. Adam is planning to make them available for sale.
