Istanbul receives the most number of complaints about noise, according to the latest statistics from the "Alo 181" call center, based in the northeastern province of Trabzon and operating under the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.
The call center has so far received around 7,500 nuisance complaints from Istanbul, followed by İzmir and Ankara, which both received more than 2,000 complaints. Other cities with high numbers of complaints are Bursa, Kocaeli, Mersin and Muğla.
The number of complaints registered in Istanbul alone are 23 percent of the total. Ali Vedat Çiftçi, the head of Trabzon's Provincial Environment and Urbanization Directorate, said that check-ups are made upon nuisance complaints and legal procedures are applied if businesses surpass the threshold value.
"In summer months, most complaints about noise are about the businesses in coastal areas of Turkey," he said, stressing that too much noise can be very distressing and affects people's quality of life.
